1881-S $1 MS68 NGC. David Bowers (2006) calls the 1881-S "the commonest Mint State Morgan dollar of the 1878-1904 era." And common and readily available it is, as NGC and PCGS have certified tens of thousands of examples through MS67. The certified population figures drop off drastically in MS68, however. The highly lustrous surfaces of this MS68 coin are untoned save for an arc of multicolored patina along the lower left obverse border. A powerful strike results in crisp definition on all of the design elements, and both faces are immaculately preserved.

Coin Engraver: George T.
