1881 John L. Sullivan Cabinet Card. Glorious photograph of the greatest figure in 19th century pugilism is notated in vintage ink on verso, "Mar. 17, 1881, 188 lbs., 188," dating the piece to the earliest stage of the Heavyweight legend's fame. It was this month that Sullivan took up residence at Harry Hill's Dance Hall and Boxing Emporium in Manhattan, offering fifty dollars to any man who could last four rounds with him under the Queensberry rules. The sepia image finds the Boston Strong Boy in formal garb, looking far more dapper than one might expect of the world's most dangerous fist fighter. Studio stamping at bottom recognizes the Boston suburb where the image was snapped. Condition is absolutely remarkable, a legitimate NRMT without even the typical edge rounding one finds on virtually all cabinet cards of the day. Size is 4x7". Unquestionably one of the finest Sullivan images to surface in recent years.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
