<B>1881 G$1 MS68 PCGS.</B></I> Care must be taken when quoting mintage figures for early U.S. coins. The recorded amounts generally refer to the number of coins struck in a given calendar year, regardless of the actual date on the coin. Additionally, coins were sometimes struck, recorded, and subsequently melted, thus creating a false sense of how many coins actually left the Mint. With a recorded mintage of 7,260 pieces, the 1881 gold dollar is, by any standard, a low mintage coin. However, the total may actually be lower. The PCGS <I>Population Report</B></I> indicates that the 1880 gold dollar, with a recorded mintage of 1,600 pieces, is of comparable rarity to 1881-dated coins.
