1881 G$1 MS67 PCGS. Ex: Bass. Only 7,620 business strike Gold Dollars emerged from the presses at the Philadelphia Mint in 1881. In the wider context of the U.S. gold series, this issue is not a significant rarity in Mint State. In fact, precious few examples are believed to have reached circulation and, indeed, most survivors are Uncirculated to one degree or another. There can be no doubt, however, that a Superb Gem is a scarce coin relative to the number of high grade gold collectors in today's hobby. This is a reddish-gold example with appreciably prooflike fields. Both sides are sharply brought up with nary a distracting abrasion to report. Some pale iridescent overtones are noted in the fields.Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 5/2000), lot 68, where it sold for $3,450. Bass purchased the coin from Rarcoa on July 24, 1972. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
