Black felt covered body and edged in patent leather. The gold-plated, brass helmet plate consists of the U.S. Eagle and Shield insignia, with artillery crossed cannons behind and "4" on top of shield, signifying the 4th Regiment. The eagle has arrows in left talon and olive branch in right talon. The helmet is topped with a fluted brass spike on a brass oak leaf base. Two artillery buttons on each side of a black leather hat band encompassing base of hat. Rear of hat at crown has a U.S. shield with a hook, to possibly hold cording. Interior is also felt, with the metal holding spike on marked "HORSTMANN BROS. & CO. /PHILADELPHIA", and leather sweat band.

Condition: Excellent with minor wear overall. Gold-plated metal has darkened with age otherwise is very good. Leather hat band has minor age cracks and wear. Interior is very fine. Sweat band is good with some discoloration and light wear.
