1881-CC $10 MS61 NGC. Winter 1-A, the only confirmed dies. In terms of both total number of coins known and number of coins believed extant above the XF grade level, the 1881-CC (24,015 pieces produced) is the most common Carson City Eagle struck prior to 1890. The most accurate estimate on the number of coins extant is 300-400+, with perhaps 30-50 pieces in Mint State (both figures are per Winter and Halperin, 2001). While not quite at the Condition Census level, the present BU quality survivor is certain to please many advanced type collectors who require a representative of Eagle production at the fabled Carson City Mint. This is a typically well struck coin for the date with no areas of bothersome incompleteness of detail. Medium intensity orange-gold color overlays both sides and lightens ever so slightly on the reverse. The surfaces are frosty in finish with light to moderate abrasions that are rather well distributed between the fields and devices.Ex: Santa Clara Signature Sale (Heritage, 11/2000), lot 7199, where it realized $5003.From the Ashland City Collection.
