1881 Alexander Cartwright Signed Hawaiian Lease
1881 Alexander Cartwright Signed Hawaiian Lease Agreement. Essential autograph is likewise one of baseball's most attractive, the sport's equivalent of John Hancock. The man officially credited by the United States Congress in 1953 with the invention of the modern game of baseball signed his name to the offered lease agreement between Queen Emma of Hawaii and a local citizen for a parcel of land in Honolulu as the queen's attorney. As baseball historians are aware, Hawaii became Cartwright's home in the later years of his life when he fled the 1849 California gold rush cholera epidemic, subsequently becoming a close advisor to the Hawaiian royal family. The impressive handwritten document unfolds to a sizeable 24x8" in size, and remains in fine, undamaged condition with original fold lines. It must be stressed that this is not the far more common onion skin copy version of Cartwright's autograph that often surfaces in the hobby, but instead a legal document hand signed by the ultimate baseball pioneer. An elegant and important artifact for the most serious of collectors. LOA from PSA/DNA.
