1881 $5 PR63 ICG. If the business strike 1881 is known for its commonness, the proof 1881 owes its desirability to rarity. The Philadelphia Mint produced just 42 proof half eagles this year, and Garrett-Guth state only 15 to 20 individual pieces are known today. The present Select quality representative is even more important to specialists because a few of the extant examples are impaired to one degree or another. The devices are fully struck, as one would expect for a proof, and the color is a rich, original, reddish-gold shade. Both sides exhibit deeply reflective fields, but only the reverse displays any degree of appreciable cameo contrast. The number of distracting surface blemishes is fewer than one might expect for the assigned grade, but pedigree concerns compel us to mention two tiny distractions in the obverse field: below Liberty's chin and between stars 8 and 9.
Ex: July 2002 New York Auction (Heritage, 7/07), lot 9238, where it was housed in a PCGS PR63 holder; 1995 Anaheim ANA Signature Sale (Heritage, 8/95), lot 5407, where it was graded PR63 Uncertified.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
