1881 3CN PR68 Cameo PCGS. Breen-2444. Obvious Doubled Date. In the past few years, collecting nickel three cent coinage has gained substantially in popularity. Not even ten years ago, these coins remained for long periods in dealer inventories. Today, it is different. Collecting Mint State and Proof three cent nickel coins is now a popular endeavor. Even though the 1881 issue is considered a common date, there are only a few that can match the quality of this example. Despite a mintage of over 3,500 Proof examples, only three coins have received the PR68 Cameo grade from PCGS, with none finer. There are no PR69 examples of this issue, and there are no PR68 Deep Cameo examples. This coin is tied with just two others (and that assumes none were resubmitted) for the finest certified examples of the issue.
The digits 881 in the date are each doubled, originally left of the final position. Walter Breen noted that this variety "comprises a minority of proofs." The far-sighted collector may wish to consider this coin as a candidate for their collection, not only for its lofty state of preservation, but for the variety as well. Collecting these coins has just begun to reach higher levels of popularity, and at some date in the future, collecting by variety may also become more popular. The collector who seeks these special varieties in the highest possible grade will have a leg up on the competition.
This is an amazing and Superb Gem Proof with creamy nickel-gray surfaces and exceptional aesthetic appeal. The fields are moderately reflective and the surfaces are pristine. Just a trace of the lightest blue and gold toning adds to the overall appearance. Population: 3 in 68, 0 finer (1/05).
From the Bruce Scher #1 All-Time PCGS Registry Set. Lot:4041
