<B>1881 3CN PR68 Cameo NGC.</B></I> The 1881 business strike three cent nickel issue was the last great gasp in this archetypal 19th century series, produced to the extent of more than 1 million pieces. Subsequent business strike mintages toward the series' end in 1889 never again topped 40,000 pieces. Annual business strike mintages were as low as 1,000 coins, sometimes even less than the proof mintages. In 1881 the proof mintage was a more consistent 3,575 pieces. The present untoned silver-white specimen is among the handful or so finest at either service, with exuberantly frosted devices and sparkling mirrored fields. The lower loops of the 8s are frosted, and recutting shows at the base of the first 1.
