1881 $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Although the 1881 receives little publicity, it is an important rarity. Only 691 pieces were struck, which includes 50 proofs. Perhaps a hundred pieces have survived, generally in XF to MS62 condition. This well struck and mildly prooflike yellow-gold piece has an occasional obverse dash of aqua-blue. Purchased in the 1930's at face value by Karl Stecher Sr. from coins turned in by the public as per President Roosevelt's March 9, 1933 directive. A collector's envelope accompanies and has the comment "1881 $2.50 proof, slightly scratched." Population: 14 in 58, 13 finer (1/07).
From The Stecher Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
