<B>1880 T$1 PR66 Cameo NGC.</B></I> The 1,987 proof Trade dollars made in 1880 represented the highest proof mintage for the series. David Bowers, writing about this proof-only issue in his <I>Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States</B></I>, contends that: "Most of the proofs still exist, perhaps 1,300 to 1,700 of the 1,987 coined. They are readily available in various grades from Proof-60 to Proof-65 or better." Moreover, the certified population data indicate that even Cameos can be located, especially through the near-Gem level. PR65s are somewhat more challenging, and anything finer is elusive.<BR> The Premium Gem Cameo proof in this lot yields impressive motif-field contrast, and is exquisitely struck throughout. Toning is absent from both faces.
