Nickels 1880 NGC graded Proof 64. <b>Light gray surfaces smooth and attractive. It is truly a borderline Gem, but provides no reflectivity, appearing like a business strike rather than a Proof. Referencing Breen's encyclopedia on Proof coinage, he notes that dull Proofs exist and often pass as business strikes. The offered coin was struck using a Proof obverse die, characterized by the first 8 touching the ball of the shield, and may be among those to which he was referring. But certainly, Proof dies were used to make business strikes as well, rendering the Proof status of this coin legitimately questionable. If, in fact, this Shield nickel is a business strike, and we strongly suggest inspection, it is much rarer and more value than a coin assigned the Proof designation..</b> <p align="center">Superior Galleries was founded in 1929 and has been a leader in
