(1880`S AMERICAN RAILROAD ARCHIVE)
A fascinating group of at least 750-1000 documents all related to railroad activities in the late nineteenth century, with the vast majority of the material being written in the late 1870s and mid 1880s. The principal Railroad represented is the Norfolk and Western Railroad, and the material appears to have been from the files of this bygone company. However, there is a large amount of material pertaining to other railroads of the period, including the INDIANAPOLIS & VINCENNES, JEFFERSON, MADISON & INDIANAPOLIS, ASHTABULA, YOUNGSTOWN & PITTSBURGH, SOUTH CHICAGO & SOUTHERN, MANSFIELD, COLDWATER & MICHIGAN, and the GRAND RAPIDS AND INDIANA, to name those seen from a random sampling of the material. Much of the material concerns the expenses incurred in running and maintaining railroads, such as pre -printed forms of payrolls, freight and passenger earnings, fuel consumed by each locomotive, and payment for stock killed (apparently a common occurrence). There are also a number of handwritten letters on company letterhead by various officials, and a number of handwritten minutes of meetings, apparently recorded by the Secretary of the respective railroad. The purchaser of this lot should be prepared to spend many hours evaluating this lot, the contents of which show little, if any evidence of aging, and are in fine condition.
