1880<S$1> MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. A large portion of the original 12+ million coin mintage of 1880 Morgan Silver Dollars were stored in the Treasury vaults for several decades, most being released in the 1940s and 1950s. By the time of the massive Treasury release of the early 1960s, few examples of this date remained. Examples with prooflike or deep mirror prooflike surfaces are few and far between. Most of the latter have, as their source, a single bag of 1,000 coins that was located in the early 1970s, according to Wayne Miller. This example is a delightful dollar with deeply mirrored fields and excellent cameo contrast. The surfaces are fully brilliant without any evidence of toning on either side. A small copper spot below Liberty's chin may serve to identify the pedigree of this example. The few light abrasions that are present on the surfaces are reflected in the mirrored fields and appear more extensive than they actually are. Only one finer example has been certified by PCGS. Population: 27 in 65, 1 finer (5/05).
