1880 Garfield Ferrotype Campaign Shell Pin
Fabulous 1880 Garfield Shell
A 28 x 33 mm brass tin shell with a ferrotype portrait of James Garfield. The raised badge is detailed "E Pluribus Unum" and is void of any pitting or verdigris as usually found, pin remains on verso. Garfield (1831-81) served as President for less than seven months when he was assassinated by Charles Guiteau. During the Civil War he rose to the rank of Major General distinguishing himself in his victory at Chickamauga. A learned lawyer and clergyman, Congressman Garfield found himself in New York City when news broke of the assassination of President Lincoln. A mob of more than 50,000 massed at the Custom's House in downtown Manhattan and threatened to riot. When they began marching to the office of the New York World crying "Vengeance!", Garfield single-handedly calmed the crowd delivering a moving speech calling for calm. This specific device is unlisted in DeWitt -- but similar examples are found for candidates ranging from Lincoln in 1864 to Greeley in 1872 and Tilden in 1876. Very minor wear at edge of ferro where set into frame else quite fine. From the Joe Brown Collection.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. Lot:27280
