1880 G$1 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. The 1880 Gold Dollar is an issue that is not often seen in either business strike or proof format. Only 36 proofs were produced and it is estimated that no more than 20-25 pieces still exist. With a limited mintage of business strikes from this year, few die varieties are known, and it is often difficult to distinguish true proofs from prooflike business strikes. Die variety notes help to some degree, but it is almost certain that business strikes were coined from the same dies as the proofs. The obverse of this piece has a tiny triangular die chip about 1/4 mm. northwest of the ear lobe. The upper tassels of the wreath are joined above the right side of the upright of the large 1. The upright of the smaller 1 (in the date) is positioned below the right curve of the O in DOLLAR.
This surely must be one of the finest proofs extant. The surfaces display rich golden-orange coloration and the fields are very deeply mirrored with sharply contrasting mint frost over the devices. A few tiny lint marks and a small planchet flake below the bust can be used for pedigree purposes. The most noticeable of these is a lint mark to the right of the date. Population: 1 in 66 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (2/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
