<B>1880 G$1 MS65 Prooflike NGC.</B></I> The 1880 gold dollar has always been a popular issue, primarily because of its low mintage of only 1,600 pieces. Knowledge of this small production led to hoarding, and as a result, a higher percentage of this date has survived, and a number of Gem and better coins known today. Each side of this wheat-gold Gem displays strongly reflective, nearly pristine mirrors and sharply struck devices. Given the sizable proportion of Prooflike pieces, it is little wonder that even seasoned numismatists of prior generations confused business strikes and proofs.
