<B>1880 G$1 MS65 Prooflike NGC.</B></I> The 1880 gold dollar has always been a popular issue, primarily because of its low mintage of only 1,600 pieces. However, it has also been an extensively hoarded date because of the same low mintage. As a result, a higher percentage of this date has survived, and there are also a significant number of Gem and better coins known today. Because of the low mintage, many coins show the original flash from the polished fields. In the past, this has made distinguishing legitimate proofs from prooflike business strikes difficult. This coin has that mirrored reflectivity in the fields, and one can easily see how the novice might be confused.
