1880-CC S$1 MS67 NGC. The 1880-CC is a Carson City dollar that has even more appeal than other common dates from this mint. The mintage is impressively low with close to 600,000 pieces struck. In February 1881, the Assay Commission determined that a number of these were of insufficient silver fineness, and 96,000 were subsequently melted at the Mint, leaving a net production figure of 495,000 coins. The 1880-CC was available from the Treasury on an occasional basis from 1938 until the late 1970s. These last coins are the GSA holdings and most likely account for this coin. While purely speculation, we base that statement on the presence of the wide arc of sea-green and russet toning at the bottom of the obverse of this coin. The GSA coins were in canvas bags in the Treasury Department for many years and a substantial number of them acquired "bag toning" from decades-long exposure to the sulphur in the canvas bag.
This piece is extraordinarily clean for a CC dollar with no mentionable marks on either side. Brilliant aside from the above-mentioned arc of toning. The hair over Liberty's ear is not quite fully struck, and close examination with a magnifier shows faint evidence of roller marks in these areas which is quite unusual on a Carson City dollar. A magnifier also shows the presence of a 7 beneath the second 8 in the date. Census: 11 in 67, 0 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
