1880-CC S$1 MS67 NGC In the original GSA holder.
1880-CC<S$1> MS67 NGC In the original GSA holder. The 1880-CC has an impressively low mintage of only 591,000 pieces. In the first few decades after production there were very few Uncirculated examples known of the 1880-CC, with the typical issue in the VG to VF grade range. Then, slowly bags began to be paid out from the Cash Room of the Treasury Building in Washington in the 1930s and bags would periodically appear until the early 1960s. The supply of '80-CC dollars was always quickly absorbed by collectors and the price steadily rose even though more and more pieces were entering the market. Once the Treasury called a halt to the over the counter sale of the dollars on hand, the GSA took account of what still remained in government coffers. It was found that 131,529 1880-CC dollars remained, and beginning in 1972 these were sold to collectors, not by date but more or less randomly--brilliant coins sold as Uncirculated and toned dollars sold as circulated. Almost all of the GSA dollars sold in the 1970s were struck in the Carson City mint. And as anyone who seen GSA dollars knows, the quality is generally marginal at best, with heavily abraded MS60-63 coins the norm.
This particular coin is extraordinary. We have never seen another GSA dollar that is even close to the quality of this piece. And for good reason--there isn't another GSA dollar of this quality. This is a one-of-a-kind coin that cannot be duplicated at any price. It is, in fact, one of the finest Carson City dollars we have ever seen of any date. The fact that it is in a GSA holder makes this a unique opportunity for the collector. Brilliant throughout, the surfaces display the usual thick mint frost that is common to all Carson City silver coins. The cheek of Liberty is rounded and free from any noticeable abrasions, as is the breast of the eagle on the reverse. The only fault we can find on this incredible coin is slight softness of strike in the centers. The original box of issue and certificate are also both included.
