1880-CC S$1 8/7 Reverse of 1878 MS67 PCGS. VAM-7, R.4. This variety with the old reverse style is related to the 1878 7TF Reverse of 1879 dollar and the 1879-S Reverse of 1878 dollar, although it seems to hold less respect among collectors. Among the reasons for this difference in opinion is the rarity of the other two varieties in Gem condition, although this variety is similarly a rarity in Superb grade. Dave Bowers writes: "The Reverse of 1878 is several times scarcer than the Reverse of 1879 variety , but in the aggregate enough exist that the premium differential is not great."
This variety is also certified as an overdate, the feature distinguished by a short dash of a 7 below the second 8 in the date. At least half of the 1880-CC Reverse of '78 dollars are overdates. Most of them have bold traces of a previous 79 within the 80 of the date. Pieces such as this example, with only a small dash below the 8, are clearly less popular with collectors.
Thick, creamy luster covers the surfaces, and both sides exhibit an essentially untoned appearance. Sharply defined throughout; there are no singularly mentionable marks on either side. The quality of this Superb Gem is undoubtedly its most important attribute. The population data reveals that such high grade coins are seldom encountered. For the Morgan dollar connoisseur or the collector seeking the finest available quality, the present offering is a remarkable opportunity. Population: 2 in 67, 0 finer (2/07).
From The Jackson Hole Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
