1880-CC Dollar, PCGS MS67
Unsurprisingly, this Superb Gem 1880-CC dollar is breathtaking. How a large silver coin managed to survive 130 years without acquiring noticeable abrasions of any sort is mindboggling. Bowers (2007) estimates that less than 50 pieces have survived in this lofty state of preservation, including uncertified examples. His same reference values this piece--on a retail level--at $59,000. This offering will likely sell for much less, based on the current wholesale price guides. Notable auction appearances include the Jack Lee PCGS MS67 coin, which realized $25,875 in Heritage's April 2007 sale, and a toned specimen that brought $20,700 in Heritage's January 2001 FUN sale.

Rich, dazzling cartwheel luster beams from both sides of this virtually un-toned example. The surfaces are, as one would expect of an MS67 survivor, splendidly free of obvious marks. An astounding offering and one of the highlights of this sale. PCGS Population (5/2009): 24 in MS67, none finer.
