1880 5C MS66 NGC. During the mid to late 1870s, once-heavy production dropped off for many three cent nickel and Shield nickel issues. Mintages plunged, and were it not for more consistent proof output, many dates would be virtually unobtainable in high grades. The 1880 Shield nickel is one such issue and, in fact, a primary example.. A mere 16,000 pieces were struck for circulation, and perhaps fewer than two dozen Mint State coins survive. As on several other high grade business strikes we have offered, the reverse has a raised die defect or lump located just below the bottom right serif of the second T in STATES. The strike is boldly executed down to the finest detail and unmarked surfaces are layered in intermingled shades of apricot and steel-blue toning. The advent of certification data has given issues like the 1880 Shield nickel their long-deserved recognition. There can be no doubt that a business strike 1880 Shield nickel is the single rarest issue of the design, the key to a complete set of these coins. The mindset of today's quality conscious, completion-minded collector demands nothing less. This lovely Premium Gem example is not only the finest of the date we have ever offered, it is tied with just a single other PCGS coin for finest certified status.
