1880<5C> MS65 PCGS. Here is an incredibly rare coin that will certainly have claims to be well up in the Condition Census and perhaps tied with the Finest Known. Housed in an older first generation PCGS holder and wonderfully free of spots or similar problems. The color is a gorgeous light nickel-blue on the obverse, with satiny and slightly reflective fields while the reverse is the standard steel-gray color. No surface marks are worthy of note, and this coin is so spectacular, that PCGS gave it the coveted Gem grade way back during their first few years of existence. This is one of the key dates to the series, and as a date a lot more common in proof condition than in any mint state or circulated grade. It would be impossible to overstate the rarity or desirability of the present coin, and any specialist in the series will quickly understand upon viewing the present coin just how special it is. A highlight for the Shield nickel collector.
During this mid to late 1870s the coinage dropped off for these Shield nickels. Mintages plunged, and were it not for the usual proofs issued, many dates would be virtually unobtainable. A mere 16,000 were struck for circulation, and all but a handful apparently disappeared. To date a scant 61 have been graded by NGC and PCGS in all grades! Where are the others, we may never know. However, we do know that this is one of the finest to survive. Population: 3 in 65, 1 finer (3/06).

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary.
