<B>1880<5C> MS65 NGC.</B></I> "Dropped 8" variety, with repunched second 8. Breen states these are only found on proofs only, but in his book <I>The Shield Five Cent Series</B></I> Edward L. Fletcher Jr. says, "It would appear that the proof obverse die was used for business strikes also." This example is boldly defined with a thin veil of milky gray patina affecting both sides. A few minor imperfections in the upper reverse field appear to be mint-caused.<BR> The 1880 Shield Nickel, with a business strike production of a mere 16,000 pieces, is a challenging issue at any level of preservation when located in something other than proof format. The odds of finding a Gem Uncirculated survivor therefore are miniscule. A similarly certified PCGS coin in last year's ANA Sale brought the impressive sum of $57,500.
