1880 5C MS64 ICG. A sharply struck near-Gem that has light green-gray patina and immaculate surfaces. A short and curly lintmark (as made) touches a point of a star near 7 o'clock. The luster is mildly prooflike. It was the policy of the Philadelphia Mint to produce token business strikes of various denominations when they were not demanded in circulation, in order to reduce the speculation in proof-only issues. Only 16,000 business strikes were issued, the lowest of the series, and these are much scarcer than the proofs of the same date. Population: 7 in 64, 4 finer (10/02).
