<B>1880 50C MS66 NGC.</B></I> The 1880 half dollar had a limited mintage of 8,400 business strikes and 1,355 proofs. If the population statistics are any guide, relatively few circulation strikes have survived in Mint State grades. In Premium Gem condition, the level of preservation of the present coin, NGC and PCGS together have certified fewer than 30 specimens, and less than 10 finer (10/06). The obverse displays golden-tan color in the central area flanked by cobalt-blue and crimson at the peripheries, whereas the reverse exhibits a more or less even distribution of intermixed cobalt-blue and olive-gray toning. The fields are partially prooflike, and offer a pleasing contrast with the lightly frosted devices. An excellent strike prevails throughout, including nice definition in Liberty's hair and sandal.
