1880 $4 Coiled Hair Four Dollar Stella, Judd-1662, Pollock-1862, High R.7, PR66 NGC. George Morgan's Coiled Hair design. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. Deeply mirrored fields on both sides serve to highlight the devices of this lovely Gem Cameo proof. Both sides have brilliant light gray color with a dash of pale gold toning on parts of the obverse. Portions of the hair details are weakly defined due to striae from the planchet preparation process. Affected are a few strands of hair above the ear, as well as some of the braids on the coil of hair at the top of the obverse.
Like the other aluminum stellas, it is thought that just four to six examples are known. Among these are the set of four from the Jeff Browning Collection and the Garrett Collection set of four that was bought by Harry Bass. Three of the four Garrett pieces were retained by the Bass Foundation and are now on display at the ANA in Colorado Springs, CO. The fourth coin from that set was sold in the first Bass Collection auction by Bowers and Merena, thus the set is no longer intact. Two examples were offered in the King Farouk sale (Sotheby's, 2/1954), but neither is traceable today. Other appearances include an example in the 1979 ANA Sale by New England Rare Coin Auctions, an example in RARCOA's May 1969 sale that cannot be identified today, and one sold as part of a four piece set (three aluminum and one copper) by Kagin's in their sale of May 1978. The specimen we are offering is the Kagin's May 1978 coin.
Ex: Kagin's (50th Anniversary Sale, 5/1978), lot 1061.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
