1880<$4> Coiled Hair Four Dollar, Judd-1661, Pollock-1861, R.6, PR62 NGC. One of the most famous rarities in American numismatics is Judd-1660, the gold 1880 Coiled Hair Stella, which has a Guide Book estimated mintage of only 20 pieces. The 1879 Flowing Hair Stella, certainly desirable in its own right, is the 'common' Stella and its 1879 and 1880 Coiled Hair counterparts are very rare in comparison. Judd-1661, struck in copper with a reeded edge from the same dies as Judd-1660, is equally rare but far more affordable. Several examples of Judd-1661 have been gilt, and such is the case with the present piece, which features a needle-sharp strike and betrays no indication of wear. The bright canary-gold surfaces are occasionally microgranular. A short, curly lintmark (as struck) beneath the A in GRAMS provides a pedigree for future auction appearances. Most collectors can only dream of owning a gold 1880 Coiled Hair Stella, but a gilt copper specimen is within reach of the advanced specialist.
