1880 $3 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. A remarkable beauty with pleasing light yellow color, this Superb proof has deeply mirrored fields and highly lustrous devices. The fields on both sides have the typical wavy or watery appearance of true Gem quality proof gold coins. A small orange toning spot below the bust tip and a tiny planchet flake outside the lower left part of the wreath may assist in tracking the provenance, but otherwise the surfaces are essentially perfect. Proof gold coins are among the rarest of all numismatic delicacies, deserving of accurate historical records, yet the general quality of these pieces is so high that such a provenance record is not easily constructed.
Only 36 examples of the 1880 three dollar gold piece were coined in proof, with 20 pieces struck in February and the other 16 coins in September. In addition to these 36 pieces, a quantity of 1,000 business strikes were produced. Two different reverse dies were used, thus the proofs and business strikes can be differentiated, with the date slanting slight up to the right on proofs. A short linear defect on this piece is located on the top surface of the right ribbon end, and it is either a lint mark or a die line, although it is difficult to distinguish on this piece. If it is a lint mark, it would most likely be present only on this coin, but if it is a die line, then it is a further diagnostic to distinguish between proof and business strike examples of the date.
