1880<$3> PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. A glorious example of this rare proof issue, and one of just 36 struck for collectors in the proof format. Apparently one of the first struck for the year as the dies show more frost on the devices than normally encountered, enough so to earn the Deep Cameo designation from PCGS. This is the finest Deep Cameo example graded by PCGS, and alone in the PR64 category. NGC has graded one finer, but none equal to the present specimen. Rich coppery-gold in the fields, and light frosty-gold on the devices. Excellent surfaces expected for the grade, with just a couple of tiny ticks in the left field from a Gem grade. Identifiable by a minute tick on the outer curve of the D of UNITED and a minor field nick a bit close to the U of that word and the base of Liberty's neck.
It is interesting to note that the present coin was struck with the obverse die used since 1877. Breen in his Proof Encyclopedia reported that this die was used for Proof Three Dollar gold coins from 1877 through 1879, but did not know that it was also used to coin at least the present coin in 1880. Obverse die diagnostics include a raised lint mark on the die (quite unusual) on Liberty's nose, another lengthy raised lint mark (again on the die) below Liberty's ear in the curls on the back of her head. A raised die lump is clearly seen in her curls near the center of her neck, a small lump on her neck near the outer curve of the second curl from the bottom. Other small lumps are found on Liberty in a line from the E of UNITED to the C of AMERICA.
From The Peter G. Apple Collection.
