1880 $3 MS64 NGC. The main attraction of the 1880 three dollar is its impressively low mintage of 1,000 pieces. Or, as the Bowers/Winter reference states for this year "The 1880 $3 stands high in the rarity sweepstakes." However, most of the survivors from this year are in mint condition, indicating much of the mintage was set aside by dealers at the time and shortly thereafter. The dealer most associated with this date is Thomas Elder, and the collector who hoarded the largest number was John Beck. This piece shows the usual mixture of prooflikeness and mint frost. The bright surfaces have a faint overlay of reddish patina, and there are no mentionable abrasions. Census: 38 in 64, 16 finer (6/07).
From The DAX Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
