A fine and scarce example of an 1878 pattern officer's home service Army Veterinary Department helmet with fitted case made by H. Lehmann Military Outfitters, Aldershot. On the front of the helmet is a crowned star pattern helmet plate, the centre with silver "AVD" monogram on a black leather background. Brass name plate mounted on tin case inscribed "G. W. Tyson Esqre. A.V.D." The all Officer Army Veterinary Department was formed in 1880 and existed until March 1906 when it was amalgamated with the other ranks of the Army Veterinary Corps. A small and short lived unit making items of this type
