1879 Thomas Hobron Kahului & Wailuku Railroad 1 Real (12 1/2 Cents) Token MS60 Brown, Bent, Corroded Uncertified. Medcalf 2TE-8. Gould-Bressett. These were produced by Captain Thomas H. Hobron and were redeemable at his general store in Kahului, Maui. Hobron's railroad line carried the profitable sugar cane industry's product from the area's mill to the port of Kahului for export. A reciprocity treaty with the United States several years earlier gave the island's sugar cane growers great advantage over other foreign sources. These scarce tokens are most often seen lightly circulated and with modest to heavy corrosion. The present example displays pleasant chocolate-brown color and the corrosion modifier refers to scattered, inoffensive areas about the devices.
