1879-S Morgan $1. Rev of 1879 PCGS MS63
1879-S Morgan Dollar. Reverse of 1879. PCGS graded MS63. The surfaces are glossy and radiant. There is no toning. A gem.

Obvious to many is the greater whiteness of the Morgan design parts compared to the Peace design issued in 1921-35. A frostiness or whiteness of the devices gives more contrast between the design and fields of a coin. To most people this has more eye appeal and is more desirable. This frosty look is due to roughness in the surface of the design. Extensive engraving work on the master die of the Morgan dollar left the design with a certain rough quality. In addition, the lettering was punched into the master die which left similar virgin roughness on the tops of the letters.

In contrast, the design of the Peace dollar required no re-engraving or extensive touched-up on the master die to sharpen details. This is because the lettering was already incorporated in the plaster models and did not leave the surface coarseness on the master die that was common on the Morgan master. Although some early strike Peace dollars do exhibit a little "frost" in Liberty's hair and on the eagle's feathers, it is nowhere near as white as on these early Morgan dollars (PCGS # 7092)
