<B>1879-S $5 MS65 PCGS.</B></I> A surprisingly difficult coin to find in Mint State, despite a relatively hefty mintage of 426,200 pieces. This example is quite flashy and well struck, with a pleasing bright sheen and lovely light coloration. The carefully preserved surfaces are surprisingly clean for the issue and, in fact, this is the single finest certified 1879-S, the only example graded MS65 by either PCGS or NGC with none finer (10/06). For pedigree purposes, we note thin marks inconspicuously placed near star 9 and the FI in FIVE and concealed on each side of the shield border.
