<B>1879-S<$20> MS62 PCGS.</B></I> Writing in 1999, Michael Fuljenz and Doug Winter made the following observations about the 1879-S double eagle: "The 1879-S Double Eagle can be located in any circulated grade without much difficulty although nice About Uncirculated coins are not nearly as common as their current price level would indicate. This is a scarce date in Uncirculated with a great majority of the known specimens grading Mint State-60. It becomes rare in Mint State-61 and any 1879-S Double Eagle grading Mint State-62 or better is very rare."<BR> This example shows lighter than usual straw-gold and mint-green toning with strong luster and a grade-consistent number of small to moderate bagmarks on each side. Typically weak on some of the central details, but very sharp on the denticles and the other peripheral devices. Of the obverse stars, only star 13 shows a bit of striking weakness.
