<B>1879 S$1 Washlady Silver Dollar, Judd-1603, Pollock-1798, High R.6, PR65 NGC.</B></I> The famous "Washlady" design by Charles Barber. A portrait of Liberty faces to the left with her hair tied up behind her head. She has a headband inscribed LIBERTY, and her hair is adorned by wheat and cotton. Above is the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and below is the date with seven stars to the left and six stars to the right. The reverse depicts an eagle holding an olive branch and three arrows. The statutory legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA follows the border with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, in smaller letters, in the field. The denomination ONE DOLLAR is below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.<BR> For more than a century, this design has carried the Washlady sobriquet. Saul Teichman has traced this name to the April 1891 sale of the F.W. Doughty Collection by New York Coin & Stamp Co., under the direction of Harlan P. Smith and David U. Proskey. The Washlady name was probably created by Proskey. Today, in the 21st century, Q. David Bowers has provided a more flattering name to this design, the "Society Lady" design, a name he has used for several years. In <I>United States Pattern Coins,</B></I> ninth edition, Bowers commented: "Assistant engraver Charles E. Barber's suite of silver patterns of the dime, quarter dollar, half dollar, and dollar denominations stands today as among his finest work. In the late 19th century, this depiction of Liberty was dubbed the 'Washlady' design, a rather unfortunate designation, as the woman depicted is elegantly coiffed, and certainly not styled as a laundress might have been."<BR> We are delighted to offer this splendid Gem. Both sides have desirable golden-ivory color with splashes of blue and iridescent toning over mirrored fields and lustrous devices. Although the central obverse and reverse are slightly weak, the sharpness of the design detail is generally excellent.
