<B>1879 S$1 PR68 Cameo NGC.</B></I> Occasionally a very special coin will emerge from the pack of usual offerings, even in the highest available grades of Proof or Mint State. This Superb Gem would seem to be such a coin. Beginning with the stunning eye appeal of the piece, which is simply breathtaking, one immediately notices startling, illimitably deep reflectivity in the watery, "black" fields. Pristine, heavily frosted devices seem to hang suspended over these unfathomable depths, creating an exquisite cameo effect on each side of the piece. It almost seems petty to mention the few slight imperfections of this unique specimen, but we will do so for sake of accuracy. Slight haze is noted in the left obverse field, the striking details above Liberty's ear are not quite full, and, using magnification, one is able to discern a faint fingerprint fragment in the right obverse field. A small lintmark (as struck), shaped like a backward "s", rests on the right reverse field area, between the wreath and the lower edge of the eagle's left (right facing) wing. None of these minor impairments seem particularly significant, however, when considered in the context of this amazing coin's overall merits, both technical and visual. We salute the bidder who is fortunate enough to win this rare prize, which is one of the finest known.
