1879 S$1 Metric Dollar, Judd-1617, Pollock-1813, R.4, PR65 PCGS. The Mint hired William Barber in 1865 as assistant engraver. Four years later James B. Longacre died, on Jan. 1, 1869, and Barber was named chief engraver. This design is from the year that William Barber himself died, and it is a derivative work on both sides. The obverse, showing Liberty wearing a coronet with a border of pearls, in many of its details is more than a little reminiscent of the Morgan dollar obverse. The elaborate reverse, with a partial wreath of cotton and corn tied at the base, a ribbon, and DEO EST GLORIA on a cartouche above, recalls elements of the Gobrecht Liberty Seated half dime and dime reverse design, introduced in 1860, as well as the Longacre Liberty Head With Motto reverse, introduced in 1866. The central reverse denotes the odd metal composition known as "goloid" that comprises the weight of exactly 25 gm metric. Reeded edge. This piece shows muted luster with deep sunset-orange and charcoal-gray patina on each side, but there are few surface impairments of any kind noted, even under a loupe. Certified in a green-label holder. Population: 9 in 65, 1 finer (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
