1879<S$1> MS66 PCGS. This is essentially a common date from an exceptionally large mintage of almost 15 million coins. Examples have always been available in Mint State grades, more or less from the very start. The mintage was a result of the Bland-Allison Act, and despite the fact that these coins were not needed in commerce, the Mint and its branches continued to produced record numbers of these cartwheels. Many were stored in the Treasury Vaults, however, most of those were paid out before the early 1960s. In more recent years, availability has been somewhat limited, especially in higher grades. Today, examples in Gem MS65 or finer grades are elusive. This Premium Gem example is fully brilliant and sharply struck with exceptional satin luster. Although a few of the tiniest contact marks are present, most would describe this as a pristine, mark-free example of the date. Population: 64 in 66, 1 finer (9/05).
From The Jack Lee Collection, III
