Black History
Patented 1879 J E Stevens “Spise a Mule" Mechanical Bank
1879 Patent Dated, Antique J. E. Stevens, Cast Iron Polychrome Painted Mechanical Bank, Jockey on Horseback, "I Always Did 'Spise a Mule." Very Good.
Antique circa 1880s, Mechanical Bank called, "I Always Did 'Spise a Mule." produced by the J. E. Stevens Company. The theme of this Bank depicting a Black Jockey atop a horse, who is thrown off when the lever is pushed. The mechanism releases the coin held in his mouth into the slot at the top end of the bank’s base. This example does have significant wear from use to its original polychrome paint, and the strap in the Jockey’s hand, which was soldered in place has separated, plus the bill on the Jockey’s hat is lacking. Overall, worthwhile yet in reed of some restoration and sold “as is”. This popular theme Patented 1879 Mechanical Bank still works.
