1879-O<$20> VF35 PCGS. Shortly after the beginning of the Civil War, Confederate forces captured the New Orleans Mint, operating it for a short period before it was shut down entirely. The mint reopened in 1879 for coinage and continued production until 1909, mostly silver dollars and lower denomination coins. The 1879-O double eagle has the second-lowest mintage--2,325 pieces--among O-mint double eagles, slightly more than the celebrated 1856-O twenty. The 1879-O was, however, saved in greater numbers. It is the last double eagle struck in Louisiana., and the only Type Three O-mint issue. The present example has pleasing surfaces for the grade, with attractive medium yellow color. The fields retain traces of luster. Overall, it is an attractive and desirable example.
