1879-O<$20> VF35 PCGS. Just after the beginning of the Civil War, the New Orleans Mint was captured by the Confederacy, and operated by them for a brief period of time before being shut down entirely in 1861. This facility did not reopen for coinage until 1879, and production continued until 1909, mostly for silver dollars and lower denomination coins. In fact, the 1879-O double eagle was the last issue of the denomination to be struck in Louisiana, thus it is the only Type Three example from this Mint. Further, the mintage of this issue was a mere 2,325 coins, meaning few have survived. This example has pleasing surfaces for the grade, with attractive medium yellow color. The fields retain traces of luster. Overall, it is an attractive and desirable example.
