<B>1879-O $20 VF30 PCGS.</B></I> The 1879 New Orleans double eagle had a tiny mintage of 2,325 pieces. By comparison, the 1879 San Francisco issue saw a production figure in excess of 1.2 million coins. The '79-O is also the only Type Three double eagle struck at the New Orleans Mint. Garrett and Guth estimate that fewer than 150 examples still survive. The coin that we offer in this lot is pleasingly smooth and largely free of noticeable abrasions. Both sides reveal a normal degree of highpoint wear for the grade, and even green-gold toning.
