1879-O $20 MS60 NGC.
1879-O $20 MS60 NGC.<p>The 1879-O is a rare and significant issue. It is the only Type Three Double Eagle produced in the New Orleans mint. Given the fact that the New Orleans mint reopened in 1879, 16 years after having been was shut down during the early days of the Civil War, these coins may have been created as some sort of concession made to the Southern mint; a goodwill gesture acknowledging the return of the mint "to the fold." Only 2,325 pieces were struck. However, the survival rate is higher than one might expect, possibly due to a number being saved as souvenirs. An estimated 100-110 pieces are known with most grading XF40 to AU55. The 1879-O is rare in the middle AU grades and very rare in AU58. It is an especially rare (and desirable) issue in Uncirculated. There are currently three Uncirculated 1879-O Double Eagles accounted for. They are as follows: 1. Midwestern collection; Ex: Dallas Bank Collection (Sotheby's/Stack's, 10/01), where it realized $115,000; Jeff Browning. The Akers plate coin. MS63 to MS64. 2. Private collection; Ex: Larry Hanks; Anthony Terranova; Spink's (12/7/95), lot 2571, where it brought $46,200. Graded MS63 by NGC. 3. This coin, Ex: Bowers and Merena (8/96), lot 425, where it realized $17,600; various dealer intermediaries; Superior (1/93), lot 1539, where it realized $19,800; unknown collector(s); probably also Ex: 1979 ANA (New England Rare Coin Auctions, 8/79), lot 465, where it brought $23,000. Graded MS60 by NGC. This is an exceptional example of this rare issue and easily the finest we have ever handled. As with most of the surviving specimens, the fields are prooflike and they have a lustrous shimmer as the coin is angled beneath a light. Fully struck throughout, even on the lower reverse rim. Only two mentionable surface flaws impair this remarkable piece: on the obverse, a long, arcing abrasion located between the date and the bottom of the bust; and at the top of the reverse, a couple of long streaks of granularity in the planchet.
