1879-O $20 AU50 NGC. The sole Motto New Orleans double eagle issue. After closure for nearly a generation, the New Orleans Mint re-opened in 1879, to help the U.S. Mint fulfill obligations of the Bland-Allison Act. New Orleans struck millions of Morgan dollars annually, but only produced double eagles in 1879. The mintage of 2,325 pieces is less than any other O-mint double eagle, save for the extremely rare 1856-O. Since no one collected gold coins by date and mintmark in 1879, the value of the 1879-O went unrecognized for decades. NGC has certified just two pieces above MS60, and even in XF, the 1879-O is a contested rarity. This straw-gold example has substantial luster for the grade, although slight wear is evident within Liberty's hair. A minor alloy spot is noted on the upper left portion of the eagle's shield.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
