1879-O $10 XF40 PCGS. The New Orleans Mint re-ope
1879-O<$10> XF40 PCGS. The New Orleans Mint re-opened in 1879 to coin legislatively mandated Silver Dollars, after a nearly twenty year closure caused by the Civil War. Gold coins were a lesser priority, as a result, the 1879-O has the second lowest mintage of any New Orleans Eagle. Just 1,500 pieces were struck; only the 1883-O at 800 pieces has a lesser production. The 1879-O is rare in all grades, since no one collected gold by mint until the 20th century, and the issue was needed in southern commerce. PCGS has certified a mere 37 examples in all grades. A bold and moderately prooflike lemon-gold representative, void of relevant marks and housed in a green label holder.
