Only the 1883-O Eagle has a lower mintage, not including the 1841-O Half Eagle of which none are known to exist. One has to wonder why the New Orleans Mint even bothered to strike the token productions of Eagles and Double Eagles in 1879, unless perhaps the true intention was to commemorate the re-opening of the mint, which had been shut down since the early days of the Civil War. The real purpose of the newly commissioned Mint was to strike vast quantities of Silver Dollars to help fulfill the Bland-Allison Act. Given the low mintage, it is not surprising that the present example has moderately prooflike luster. It is bright, sharply struck, and has a few minor contact marks in the fields. Faintly hairlined from a long ago cleaning, it would still be a standout of any specialized collection. </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>08/08/2001</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$13,225.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>03/01/2000</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$14,950.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder.
